Why service your boiler?

Modern condensing boilers are relatively complex pieces of equipment that require regular maintenance to ensure their safety and efficiency. So an annual service will make sure that you are not wasting money with an in-efficient boiler, increase your boiler's lifespan and ensure its safe operation. Regular servicing should also greatly decrease the chances of your boiler breaking down unexpectedly, usually at the worst of times when it is very cold and lack of heating and hot water will be most sorely missed. It is also usually a requirement for any extended warranties or boiler cover to have it serviced annually.

What does a boiler service constitute?

The service would normally take at least thirty minutes and should include the following

  • Visual check to ensure boiler, site and fittings meet current regulations.
  • Fire up the boiler to check for any working faults
  • Check flue terminals are not obstructed and that components are sealed properly
  • Ensure burner is combusting efficiently (using flu gas analyser)
  • Inside casing surfaces and boiler parts cleaned as necessary
  • Boiler casing replaced and checked for proper sealing
  • Service report detailing all checks and procedures carried out.

Gas Safety

Whilst we do not want to be scaremongering about the dangers of gas boilers, after all modern boilers are extremely very safe and it is highly unlikely to have any safety issue with a modern, properly installed boiler , there are a few incidents each year where people lose their lives to either carbon monoxide poisoning or gas explosions through unsafe boilers and other appliances.

Carbon monoxide is an odourless, colourless poisonous gas that is created when a gas appliance is not burning the gas and venting the exhaust fumes properly. Look out for flames that normally burn blue turning yellow or orange, sooty stains appearing or blockages in the flue or chimney. Fit a carbon monoxide detector near to your boiler or other gas appliance for more peace of mind.
